The LiveLearning Program promotes positive social change by engaging learners of all ages in educational expeditions in partnership with international community-building initiatives.

We inspire both travelers and hosts alike to become responsible citizens and leaders, at home and abroad.

(Rio Limpio, Dominican Republic)
Step Outside recently participated in a "Educator Expedition" with the Live Learning program, where we had a chance to review one of their programs while receive training ourselves on a number of service-learning topics. Our evaluation seen below is a collection of reviews from Live Learning administrators, participants, and community members in Rio Limpio. Program Evaluation:

Strenths

Thoughtful and careful relationship development with the local community...

  • Live Learning seeks out community members to determine what projects are needed
  • There is a good exchange of Ideas between Live Learning and local organizations
  • The partnership is the primary concern with every step taken
  • Live Learning is very careful not to impose cultural values
Programs are thoughtfully developed and run well...
  • Appropriate focus on student/participant experience guides program structure
  • Local community members and organizations help create in-country projects
  • Facilitators remain flexible throughout the programs to ensure best possible experience
  • Administrative details and logistics are very thorough. The following details are provided
    • Pre-trip logistical information
    • Information needed to book airfare/travel
    • Information regarded travel visas
    • Packing List
    • Information packet on health and safety
    • In-country travel
    • Lodging
    • Meals
    • Afternoon/evening activities
    • Overall itinerary/schedule
  • Program expenses cover only necessary costs, and have a direct positive impact on the local community
  • Facilitators have wealth of knowledge surrounding service-learning, in-country travel, and local culture

Weaknesses
  • Projects are still being developed to address the community needs
  • Formal strategic plan to address needs of local community is still in progress

  • Sustainability of relationship is currently dependent on Live Learning's limited staff

  • Cultural exchange needs to include more sharing of U.S. culture, or that of the Live Learning participants
  • Remote location can create travel difficulties
